Kick Off 2020 With The Death Star Exploding, Thanos Snapping And More

US-LIFESTYLE-NEWYEAR-2020

For many people, New Years Eve is a night to cut loose and party. However, for parents or people who aren't into the whole dressing up and dancing in the middle of the week, there's nothing better than staying in and watching the ball drop (preferably in your pajamas).

But what if you're not interested in watching the chaos unfold in Times Square? Why not settle in and watch a movie? Better yet, why not stay in and time your movie-watching so that the climax of the films occurs right at midnight?

With that in mind, we've tracked down the exact time you'll need to start watching so you can time 2020 with the Death Star's explosion or Thanos' snap.

Let's start with the classic Death Star I explosion. Ring in 2020 with an 'You're all clear kid!' and the destruction of the Empire's prized super-weapon.

Because there are a few editions of 'A New Hope' out there (darn you Lucas!), your start time may vary:

  • Disney+: Press play at exactly 10:02:43 pm. The Death Star explodes at 1:57:17 in the movie.
  • Blu-Ray/Digital Streaming: Press play at exactly 10:02:42 PM. The Death Star explodes at 1:57:18.
  • Special Edition DVD: Press play at 10:02:48 PM. The Death Star explodes at 1:57:12.

Nothing could stop Thanos from collecting all six infinite stones as Marvel began wrapping up its 22-film epic with one of the most powerful villains in the MCU. Now, you can watch Thanos erase half of all life at exactly midnight if you begin watching 'Avengers: Infinity War" at exactly 9:48:54 p.m.

Then again, if you're more hopeful about how 2020 will go, perhaps you'd prefer to ring in the New Year with the Hulk snapping everyone back after they were 'blipped' away. To do that, simply start 'Avengers: Endgame' at exactly 9:58:37 p.m. and you'll ring in the new year with everyone returning back to life at around 2:01:23 in the film.

However, if you're more in the mood to go out with a triumphant moment in the final battle over Thanos, you could always start your 'Avengers: Endgame" viewing at 9:29:31 p.m. to end 2019 hearing Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) snapping Thanos' army into dust.

Maybe you're not in the mood for super-powered heroes knocking the crap out of villains. Perhaps you're hoping to kick off 2020 with a hopeful romantic comedy that makes you feel good about your romantic prospects next year. We recommend you watch one of the best romantic comedies of the 90s, “When Harry Met Sally.”

Not only does this movie star Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan in their prime, it's also the only movie on our list that contains an actual countdowns to midnight on New Years Eve. To watch Harry finally confess his love to Sally at midnight as they countdown to the new year, cuddle up with your significant other (or potential significant other) and start ‘When Harry Met Sally’ at exactly 10:30:29 p.m.

While Ghostbusters II was many things to many people, no one would accuse it of being a 'great' movie. However, it's always fun to watch Bill Murray smarm his way across the screen with legendary comedians like Dan Ackroyd, Harold Ramis, and the rest of the cast have a blast filming together.

If you'd like to kick off 2020 with Murray's Peter Venkman wishing the evil manifestation of the evil sixteenth-century tyrant, Vigo the Carpathian 'Happy New Year,' then press play on Ghostbusters II at exactly 10:27:52 PM.

Then again, perhaps you've seen Star Wars and the MCU movies enough times that you have them all memorized. You might enjoy watching one of the best heist movies over the last twenty years - Oceans 11. The remake starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Andy Garcia and directed by Steven Soderburgh has achieved cult status over the years and for good reason.

By the end and after Clooney and the rest of Oceans 11 are triumphant, they watch the Bellagio Fountains as Claire de Lune plays in the background. All you have to do is start the movie at 10:11:54 p.m.
